What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR is an empowering, structured, evidence-based therapy for healing emotional distress at its root. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR doesn’t rely on analysing or discussing the past in great detail. It works by tapping into your own innate healing process.

EMDR is especially effective where issues are linked to particular difficult experiences that have been difficult to process. You may have tried a range of other talking therapies with limited impact and continue to suffer triggers and the impacts of these memories in your present life, if so EMDR could be helpful for you.

By tapping into your brain’s own natural healing process, EMDR allows distressing memories to be ‘unstuck’ and processed in a healthier way. Many clients experience lasting shifts in just a few sessions — often faster than with traditional talk therapy.

Originally developed for trauma and PTSD, EMDR is now used to help with anxiety, low self-esteem, grief, and a wide range of emotional challenges which developed from specific distressing experiences.

When a person experiences trauma, their brain cannot process information as it does ordinarily. Natural healing processes become impaired and a single traumatic event develops into chronic trauma. EMDR helps people heal from trauma symptoms by harnessing and restoring the brain’s natural healing processes.

The efficacy of EMDR is backed by a large body of clinical research and it is recognised by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, NICE, as an effective treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder, developmental trauma disorder and other trauma disorders.

EMDR protocols desensitise traumatic memory, allowing the brain to reprocess its meaning. This allows clients to naturally find a positive, adaptive comprehension of events, leading to a safe emotional and physical resolution.

EMDR functions differently from regular psychotherapy and counselling and offers the possibility of direct trauma resolution. Typically, EMDR is both effective and quick because long-term retrospective analysis is not necessary. Clients often process and resolve traumatic memories with a minimum of discussion. EMDR has transformed thousands of lives and been proven effective in a wide range of trials and studies worldwide.

EMDR is recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), NICE (UK), and other global bodies for the treatment of PTSD and trauma.

You remain in control throughout, and the process is respectful, non-invasive, and deeply empowering.

How Does EMDR Work?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a structured therapy that helps people heal from difficult or distressing experiences — without needing to talk about them in detail.

How EMDR Therapy Works

When disturbing experiences happen, they are stored in the brain with all the sights, sounds, thoughts and feelings that accompany them. When a person is very upset, the brain seems to be unable to process the experience as it would normally. Therefore, the negative thoughts and feelings of the traumatic event get “trapped” in the nervous system. Since the brain cannot process these emotions, the experience and/or their accompanying feelings, are often suppressed from consciousness. However, the distress lives on in the nervous system where it causes disturbances in the normal emotional functioning of the person. This is the reason why some people report experiencing anxiety attacks which come on at random for no apparent reason!

EMDR does two very important things. First, it “unlocks” the negative memories and emotions stored in the nervous system, and second, it helps the brain successfully process the experience.

Why Can i expect from EMDR Therapy

EMDR follows a clear, phased framework designed to prioritise safety, preparation, and effectiveness. Therapy is always paced collaboratively, and you are never expected to revisit experiences before you are ready.

The therapist first finds out the issues that the client wishes to address and identifies (through discussion) the traumatic memories are related to those issues. After the memories are ascertained, a target memory is then mutually selected for processing.

The client is instructed to recall the target memory and notice the feelings (emotions and body sensations) that arise. Following this, the client is directed to engage in bilateral stimulation (e.g. eye movements, rhythmic tapping) while holding awareness on the feelings associated with the target memory.

As the client performs the bilateral stimulation movements, it typically results in a gradual reduction in the intensity of the unpleasant feelings that they experience. Along the way, their mind may generate new associations, insights, or emotions/sensations related to the memory.
The bilateral stimulation is repeated until there are no unpleasant feelings reported by the client. The process of going through a memory with EMDR therapy can take anywhere between one to several sessions per memory.

When the memory is revisited upon completion, it should no longer bring up any emotional distress. Also, there is usually an accompanying positive shift in the client’s perspective of, and the meaning given to the memory.
